    Alpine river ecosystem response to glacial and anthropogenic flow pulses

    Alpine glacier-fed river hydrology, chemistry and biology can vary significantly both in space and over diurnal to inter-annual timescales, as a function of dynamic inputs of water from snow, ice and groundwater. The sensitivity of biota to these water source dynamics potentially makes them susceptible to hydrological changes induced by anthropogenic activities, such as flow regulation, but most alpine studies have focused on intact rivers and during summer only. We examined the patiotemporal dynamics of physicochemical habitat and macroinvertebrate communities in a high (>2000m) altitude floodplain in the European Alps over an 18 month period. A novel insight is presented into the river system and macroinvertebrate community responses to both natural glacier melt driven expansion-contraction of unregulated river sites, and intermittent flow pulses due to hydropower regulation. Mainstem glacier-fed river sites displayed cyclical seasonal dynamics in macroinvertebrate community composition, shifting to be partly reminiscent of groundwater tributaries in winter then back to meltwater again in the following spring. Significant unimodal relationships were observed between glacial influence and macroinvertebrate community density, richness, Simpson's diversity, evenness and beta diversity. These relationships suggest that glacial influence can have positive effects on biodiversity where glacier meltwater mixes with non-glacial water and habitat diversity is maximised. Regulationinduced flow pulses led to inconsistent responses amongst macroinvertebrates, with no significant effects in summer 2008 but increased density and decreased taxonomic richness in 2009. Furthermore, macroinvertebrate community composition was not affected significantly by reservoir releases despite significant increases in water temperature and discharge at these times. The effects of alpine river management for hydropower production on macroinvertebrate communities in this river system appear to be relatively minor, but further studies need to be undertaken in other alpine locations to assess the generality of this finding

    Work stress and cancer researchers : an exploration of the challenges, experiences and training needs of UK cancer researchers.

    Work stress is a significant issue for many UK healthcare professionals, in particular those working in the field of oncology. However, there have been very few attempts to explore the challenges, experiences or training needs of researchers working in cancer research. In doing so, we will be better positioned to support and develop these researchers. 18 UK oncology researchers from a variety of backgrounds took part in a semi-structured interview. Interviews were transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis. The analysis identified two overarching themes: logistical research issues (workload, accessing/ recruiting participants, finances) and sensitive research issues (emotional demands, professional boundaries, sensitivity around recruitment). One cross-cutting theme, supportive strategies (support and training, coping mechanisms), was seen to influence both logistical and sensitive research issues. While further research is needed to fully understand the causes and impact of work stress on cancer researchers, three specific issues were highlighted: emotional demands are relevant to quantitative and mixed methods researchers as well as those engaged in qualitative research; the researchers’ background (experience; clinical/non-clinical) was influential and an exploration of effective coping strategies is required; and there is a clear need for adequate support systems and training to be available, particularly for early career researchers.</p

    Strain-dependent and distinctive T-cell responses to HIV antigens following immunisation of mice with differing chimpanzee adenovirus vaccine vectors

    In vivo vaccination studies are conventionally conducted in a single mouse strain with results, only reflecting responses to a single immunogenetic background. We decided to examine the immune response to an HIV transgene (gag, pol and nef fusion protein) in 3 strains of mice (CBA, C57BL/6 and BALB/c) to determine the spectrum of responses and in addition to determine whether the serotype of the adenoviral vector used (ChAd3 and ChAd63) impacted the outcome of response. Our results demonstrated that all three strains of mice responded to the transgene and that the magnitude of responses were different between the strains. The C57BL/6 strain showed the lowest range of responses compared to the other strains and, very few responses were seen to the same peptide pool in all three strains of mice. In CBA and BALB/c mice there were significant differences in IFNÎł production dependent on the adenoviral vector used. Our results suggest that employing a single strain of mouse may underestimate the efficacy and efficiency of vaccine products

In this paper we study the relationships between these two descriptions. Our results have implications for corner polyhedra. One consequence is that nonnegative, continuous valid functions suffice to describe corner polyhedra (with or without rational data)

    We generalize the classical binary Condorcet jury model by introducing a richer state and signal space, thereby generating a concern for consistency in the evaluation of aggregate information. We analyze truth-telling incentives in simultaneous pre-vote communication in heterogeneous committees and find that full pooling of information followed by sincere voting is compatible with a positive probability of ex post conflict in the committee
